Sentence Structure |
- Simple
- one independent clause (can stand alone).
- Example: I am moving, grooving, jamming, singing performer.
- Example: The enthusiastic boy walked home from school.
- one independent clause (can stand alone).
- Compound
- Two independent clauses (both can stand alone) combined together with a coordinating conjunction semi-colon, or conjunctive adverb.
- FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
- Example: I went to the store, for I needed milk.
- Example: I don't need your address; I already have it.
- Example: I want to wear my new shoes to school; however, I have gym class tomorrow.
- Complex
- Contains one independent clause (can stand alone) and one dependent clause (cannot stand alone).
- Example: After I went to the movies, I met John at the mall.
- Example: Although gummy bears are fat free, they are full of sugar and calories.
- Contains one independent clause (can stand alone) and one dependent clause (cannot stand alone).

Using the Sentence Types in Writing
Directions: Please select one of the three prompts below. Then, write at least 8 sentences answering the prompt while using the four sentence types. Each sentence type much be used at least once.

Who doesn’t like sleeping in? If I had another week of spring break, I would definitely make time to sleep in! “Wake up!” is what my alarm clock tells me each and every morning before the sun, so it would be nice to be able to ignore it for another week. After sleeping in, I would go for a run along the river. I love reading! With work and other things to get done, I usually do not have enough time to read. With another week of spring break, I would make the time to read a book or two. Sleeping, running, and reading are a just a few things I would do with another week of spring break.
